Upper Beaverkill

These hallowed waters are considered the birthplace of American Fly Fishing. Anglers were writing about the great Brook Trout fishing here as early as 1816 when Washington Irvin wrote about it, shortly before he wrote “Rip Van Winkle.”

In this area, were the first destination resorts where outdoor enthusiasts ventured to escape city life and pursue wild trout and small game. The first fishing club was formed in 1873 and the camp kids get to fish at one on the oldest fishing clubs in the country.

There is some public access on the Upper Beaverkill, and the Beaverkill from Roscoe to East Branch has plenty of marked public access.

For more history and information about the Beaverkill, two great books to read are “The Beaverkill, A History Of A River And It’s People” by Ed Van Put, and “Land Of Little Rivers” by Austin Francis.
